Globe Announces Significant Reduction in Bank-Related Spam and Scam SMS

#Globe has reported a significant reduction in bank-related spam and scam SMS. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of its stringent anti-fraud measures and strategic alliances with major financial institutions.

Between January and June 2024, Globe successfully blocked 2,740,012 bank-related spam and scam messages. This represents a 43.56% year-on-year decrease compared to the 4,855,199 messages intercepted during the same period in 2023.

This remarkable progress is a testament to Globe’s proactive strategies and strong partnerships with the country’s leading banks and financial institutions.

The improvement follows Globe’s anti-fraud agreements with the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP), which includes 45 major banks, and several individual entities in the finance sector. These partnerships have facilitated robust and timely data and intelligence sharing, aligning efforts to more effectively prevent and investigate fraud.

Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer and Chief AI Officer, said, “Our joint efforts with the banking sector have greatly bolstered our battle against spam and scam SMS targeting depositors. By collaborating and sharing crucial intelligence, along with our improved detection and blocking systems, we can better safeguard our customers from unlawful activities.”

Globe has invested approximately US$20 million to upgrade its spam and scam SMS detection and blocking systems to prevent fraudulent messages from reaching consumers.

The company operates a 24/7 Security Operations Center that filters out unwanted messages, including app-to-person and person-to-person SMS from both international and domestic sources.

Despite this decline, Globe urges mobile users to stay alert to emerging scam tactics that bypass cellular networks, such as the use of chat apps and fake cell towers capable of sending messages without telco detection.
