BSP, DILG, and GCash Amplify Digital Financial Services for Market Vendors

The Paleng-QR Ph Plus Program, a joint initiative by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), has made significant strides in promoting digital transactions across public markets, transport hubs, and small businesses in Antipolo, Bacoor, and General Santos City. This has been made possible through a partnership with GCash, the country’s top finance super app.

The program aims to accelerate the digitalization of transactions, providing a secure and efficient payment method. GCash plays a crucial role in this initiative, helping local governments create new opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and their customers. By offering convenient, safe, and fast services, GCash broadens the financial footprint and enables citizens to enjoy the benefits of cashless transactions.

Antipolo City, one of the first cities to adopt cashless transactions since 2021, is among the cities that have embraced this transformative digital payment initiative. Currently, vendors in the City Mall of Antipolo and tricycle operators accept GCash QR payments. The city also hosts thousands of GCash partner outlets, some of which are strategically located within its public market.

The initiative has also expanded to the southern region with the launch of the Paleng-QR Ph campaign in Bacoor City. Here, GCash and its public sector partners have successfully onboarded market vendors and tricycle drivers for cashless payments.

Most recently, the digitization efforts of GCash and its partners have been strengthened with the roll-out of Paleng-QR Ph in General Santos City. Market vendors and tricycle drivers have actively participated in the Paleng-QR Ph Plus program. An increase in participation is anticipated following the issuance of an ordinance encouraging all business establishments, including MSMEs and local transportation in the city, to adopt digital payments. Sari-sari stores across the city have also been onboarded as GCash Pera Outlets.

“By continuing our strategic partnership with the public sector, GCash cements its position as one of the key drivers of nation-building, leading to the empowerment of communities nationwide, especially the unbanked, in line with its “Finance for All” pursuit,” said Ren-Ren Reyes, president and CEO of GCash mobile wallet operator G-Xchange, Inc.

In addition, GCash will continue its financial literacy sessions for public market vendors and tricycle drivers about its services, including GSave, GLoan, GInsure, GGives, and GCredit among others, to further educate locals on how they can grow and manage their finances better.
