GCash and Zolo Forge Partnership to Combat E-Waste

Groundbreaking Partnership Addresses the Tech Industry’s Growing Environmental Challenge

#GCash has announced a strategic partnership with Zolo, a global leader in sustainable IT Asset Disposal (ITAD) solutions. This collaboration aims to address the environmental impact of electronic waste by refurbishing and reselling unused devices, creating a more sustainable future.

Tackling the E-Waste Crisis

According to the Global e-Waste Monitor 2024 report, the Philippines generated 540 million kg of e-waste in 2022. A significant factor is the lack of access to proper e-waste disposal facilities. As e-waste continues to grow, GCash is taking the lead in promoting responsible e-waste management, aligning with its ongoing sustainability initiatives like GForest.

“By finding ways to extend the life of devices and embracing creative approaches to repurpose and recycle, we’re not just reducing waste—we're advocating for a sustainable economy,” said Pebbles Sy, chief technology and operations officer at GCash. This initiative underscores GCash’s commitment to minimizing its carbon footprint and inspiring other organizations to follow suit.

Zolo’s Role in Sustainable IT Solutions

Zolo, an Australian company with operations in the Philippines, shares GCash’s vision for a greener planet. As a carbon-neutral ITAD solutions provider, Zolo focuses on extending the lifecycle of electronic devices, conserving valuable resources, and reducing the demand for new materials. For businesses seeking sustainable IT management, Zolo offers expertise in green technology solutions.

“It’s a pleasure to find a partner like GCash that aligns with our mission to push the boundaries of sustainability in the Philippines,” said Saar Herman, country manager at Zolo Philippines.

Supporting Communities and the Environment

This partnership aligns with GCash’s broader efforts to support sustainability, including its reforestation movement under the GForest initiative. Since its launch in 2019, GForest has planted over 2,810,000 trees across 11,600 hectares, providing incremental livelihoods to 8,600 farmers. Learn more about GCash’s eco-friendly initiatives.

Proceeds from the partnership with Zolo will go to the ABS-CBN Foundation, a non-profit organization known for its environmental stewardship and community service. This collaboration showcases the power of partnerships in creating meaningful, eco-conscious solutions.

A Call to Action for Sustainability

“GCash has created a movement that allows millions of Filipinos to participate in meaningful actions to protect the environment,” stated CJ Alegre, sustainability head at GCash. “We are pioneering a sustainable revolution in fintech where every transaction brings us closer to a greener future.” Through partnerships like this, GCash aims to inspire other organizations to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to a healthier planet.
